Having a chronic illness costs a lot of money

In the past couple of weeks it has been brought home to me just how much extra money I spend on my illness.

1. Prescription charges either £7.40 per script, £29.10 for 3 months or £104.00 for 12 months

2. Over the counter medication for pain relief (paracetomol, ibuprofen tablets and gels), for symptomatic relief (e.g. buscopan) and for emergencies (anti-diarrhoea, constipation relief etc).

3. Approx 10 phone calls to order prescriptions, ask questions about a hospital letter, re-arrange an automatically booked appointment that was not convenient.

4. Hospital parking charges

5. Petrol to get to said appointments and collect scripts and medicines

6. Dietary supplements

7. Extra toilet paper

What unexpected expenses do you have to account for with Crohn’s Disease?

  1. Extra underwear, lost wages, spending more money for the quality toilet paper
